Gas Detectors Keep Your Employees Safe

If your factory uses any kind of potentially dangerous gasses, like methane or carbon monoxide, you need to make sure that your employees are safe. It's more than just good business practice to make sure that you know when those gasses are at too high a level. There are various ways that you can do that.

Fixed Gas Detectors

One way to make sure that your employees are safe from any of the gasses that might be produced by your factory is to use fixed gas detection. These are detectors that are placed at various points throughout your factory. They are permanently installed in those places. They may be placed at different heights in the wall, depending on what gas they are looking for. For example, carbon monoxide is heavier than oxygen, so the detector would be placed lower down on the wall so that the gas can be detected well before it starts to displace the oxygen enough to cause problems. You can also have detectors that will sense different kinds of gasses put in different places. For example, you may have propane monitors in one place, but have a methane monitor in a different place because the two gasses would be more prevalent in those particular areas.

Portable Gas Detectors

There are also portable gas detectors. These can come in a variety of sizes and can include small devices that your employees can wear while they are working. That can be a good idea for employees who work in those potentially dangerous areas because they can be affected by a smaller amount of gas than it might take to trip a sensor. Firefighters can also carry portable gas detectors so that they can pick up on gas leaks. For example, if you call the fire department because there is an odor of propane, the firefighters would come in with the detector. They will be able to see if there is propane, and if so, how high the concentration is. Having that information can help you figure out what you need to do about whatever is going on in your factory.

Keeping your employees safe is really important. Making sure that they aren't exposed to dangerous gasses is one way to make sure that happens. Gas detectors, both fixed and portable, let you monitor the concentration or appearance of those hazardous gasses, which keeps your employees and your factory in better shape.
